Untitled-1

Well, folks, the weather report is for sun tomorrow, so all systems are go.  This is going to be a huge sale, so come visit us and join in the fun.  If you’re a seller, please post an ad on Craigslist.  You can put it in the garage sale section or the arts and crafts section.  The more advertising we have, the more people show up!

Sticker Dresser 2

Remember I told you about the umpteen million rolls of adhesive vinyl I’ll be selling tomorrow?  Well, I was perusing a DIY book from the library and found the above project.  It’s a dresser decorated with circles punches from this vinyl.  See, stickers are not just for kids.

Austin Kleon

One of my customers turned me on to Austin Kleon’s weekly newsletters.  They’re fantastic.  Every week he sends out a list of 10 things he thinks are worth sharing.  I think his newsletter is definitely worth sharing!

A couple great sites I found on Reddit:

Free Documentaries:  Documentary Heaven

Looking for a good movie to watch?  Well, where else would you look except at A Good Movie to Watch dot com?  You can’t view the movies here, but they recommend highly rated movies that are not well-known.

See You On Sunday?

Standard

==============================

Image

Hey, kids.  Just reminding you about the garage sale on Sunday.  All the info is here:

Facebook Event or RubyDog Blog

At this time, I know of 8 people, besides myself, who are vending for sure.  You’re all welcome to join us and sell your art and art supplies.  As I mentioned earlier, the last sale was a HUGE success.

If you’re a seller, do post some pictures of the Facebook Event page.  And, watch your email on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.  If it’s raining, I’ll probably cancel.

Dilly image

The other day I was on Commercial Street and was so pleased to see that Dilly Dally is still open.  It is really hard to keep a small retail business going in this increasingly expensive city, so I was very happy to see them succeeding.  If you’ve never been to this enchanting store you should pay them a visit.  I suppose it’s really a kids toy store, but I sure have a lot of fun in there.  :o)

They have beautiful, handmade, wooden toys from Switzerland, children’s books with pictures by some of my favourite illustrators and fabulous tin toy cars from The Czech Republic, to name just a few of their many goodies.  Go check them out!

letterpress garage

Diane Gillespie is one of our sellers on Sunday.  I don’t know what art supplies she’s bringing, but I do know what she is NOT bringing – her letterpress printing shop.  It’s way too heavy to haul out to our sale, but she is selling everything.  If you’ve ever been interested in getting into letterpress printing, this is your chance.  You can see her ad on Craigslist.

Emily Payne

I try to stay off Pinterest because there is so much amazing art on it I can end up spending hours and HOURS looking at everything.  In her most recent newsletter Shary Bartlett included a link to her Pinterest boards and, there I was again, using up my afternoon perusing all the fabulous pictures and following the links to them.  Sigh.  Very enjoyable, though.  LOL  Click here and see what I mean.

And, if indulging in Pinterest is not enough for you, here is some more glorious art:

Adriana Katz’s geometric collages
Patrick Porter‘s outsider art
Amy Lighthall‘s patterns and abstract art
Eszter Bornemisza‘s fibre art and mixed media

Another Artsy Fartsy Garage Sale!!

Standard

garage sale 2a

Well, the last garage sale was such a roaring success we’ve decided to hold another one, while the sun is still shining.  (Yes, it will eventually rain).

Date:  Sunday, August 16
Time:  10:00 – 3:00
Place:  Corner of E. 11th Ave. and Quebec St.  (1 block west of Main)

If you want to join us and sell off some of your excess craft supplies or the fabulous art you created, feel free.  I’ll be creating a Facebook Event page and, once that’s done, I’ll post the link on this blog.  As well, there will be ads on Craigslist and Kijiji, flyers in all the coffee shops along Main St. and signs on the main arteries around the neighbourhood.  If you have a blog or newsletter please forward the info.

Last sale I had lots of inquiries about renting tables, how to display items, etc. etc.  Just know, this is truly a garage sale.  It takes place along the sidewalk in front of my apartment building.  There’s no major organising on my part, other than all the advertising.  You can bring a table or just put your goodies on a blanket.  Price everything or not.  Organise the items professionally or just have a rough-and-tumble display.  It’s all up to you.

We had an absolutely amazing turnout last time and sold tons of stuff, so seriously think of participating.  Questions?  Email me at the usual rubydogart address or contact me through this blog.

Ray ophoff

Ray Ophoff (oil paintings) and Joan Tayler (polymer clay) will be having an open studio this Saturday from noon to 5:00.  Joan is giving a polymer clay demo at 1:00.  Check it out.

884 E. Georgia St.

As well, the kind folks at Renzo’s Café, 1301 Commercial Drive (at Charles) will be featuring some of Ray’s work all month and the first fifty people to tell them “Ray sent me” will receive a delicious coffee beverage of their choice on his tab!

====================================

Okay, gotta head out to my lockers now and dig up goodies for the garage sale.  You, however, may just want to spend some time looking at art on your computer.  Have you ever checked out my ‘Favourites’ on Etsy?  No?  Well, this will occupy you for a while:

Garage Sale Questions

Standard

Garage-Sale-Signs-Featured

I’ve been asked a number of questions today about the garage sale, so thought I would answer them here, for everybody.

1.. Yes, you can sell your art.  In fact, I would love to see a few people doing this.  The sale is not limited to just supplies.

2.  Yes, you can sell your homemade foodstuffs.  I know it’s not ‘art stuff’, (there are those, though, who would argue cooking is an art), but I think it really adds to the whole event to have some food there.

3.  Yes, you can sell vintage and collectable items.  I would ask, though, that 1/2 of the goods you are selling are art related.  I am going to mention, on the flyers and online ads, that vintage items will also be sold.

4.  Yes, all your friends and acquaintances are welcome to sell their artsy-fartsy stuff, too.  The more, the merrier!

5.  For those of you who did not attend the last sale we had, it will take place along Quebec St., between 10th and 11th Avenues, in front of my apartment building (which has it’s own share of fabulous artists).  You’ll have to bring your own table, blanket, whatever.

6.  Parking is sometimes difficult in this area as so much of it is designated ‘Permit Parking Only’.  You will probably have to drop off your stuff then park a block or two away.

Okay, that answers all the questions I’ve received so far.  Do email me if there is anything else you would like to know.

Seeing as how I’m doing this blog post, anyway, check out this cool site I just discovered:
Bored In Vancouver
I haven’t had time to really go through it, but I’m sure there are few discoveries to be made.  I did see a link to ‘Submit a Listing’, so I’ll be sending them the info on the garage sale.
