Below is some information on Artist Trading Cards , as well as all the details for the Vancouver, B.C. monthly swap.
If you’re coming to our beautiful city you are more than welcome to drop in and trade some cards or just hang out. The more, the merrier!
WHAT’S AN ATC?
An ATC is an Artist Trading Card – a miniature, original piece of art that has only two rules:
– The size must be 2.5″ x 3.5″
– It must be traded, never sold.
Swiss Artist m. vanci stirnemann is hailed as the father of ATCs. Inspired by witnessing sports card trading during the Calgary Olympics, he created and showcased 1,200 works of art in a 2.5″ x 3.5″ format at a Zurich, Switzerland gallery. He refused to sell the cards, but offered to swap with anyone who brought in a similar size art piece.
ATC’s came to Canada through Don Mabie (aka Chuck Stake), who was in Zurich to experience the first Artist Trading Card session. He brought the idea back to Calgary and, on September 17, 1997, the first trading session in Canada took place at The NEW Gallery, where 20 artists gathered to make and trade cards. The idea caught on immediately and spread around the world. A movement was born!

(This is 2 blocks north of E. 1st Ave., just off Commercial Drive.)
3rd Sunday of every month
Noon to 4:00 pm
The swap itself does not take place until 3:00 pm. From noon to 3 feel free to drop in and work on a project, do a show-and-tell, demo a technique or just sit around and chat.
Expect to trade at least 15 cards and often as many as 28
There is a suggested theme each month. Participants can choose to create art around any, all or none of these themes. They are simply suggestions in case your muse is on vacation. The monthly theme list is below.
If you’d like to join the Vancouver ATC Yahoo Group, please contact me and I will send you the email address for Penelope Harris, the administrator of the group and organiser of the monthly swap. I highly recommend joining. You’ll receive very few emails; just the pertinent ones – a monthly reminder about the swap and notices of time changes, which sometimes happens.
